Chapter eighteen
The van bumped up the driveway, spraying gravel as it went, and pulled up with a shudder. For a moment, they looked at the house, the only sound the tick, tick, tick of the cooling engine. The door to the former Victorian vicarage opened, framing an elderly man.
Rick jumped out of the cab of the van and gave the man a brief hug before nodding his head back towards the van where Matt was pulling out two overnight bags.
“Mr Taylor,” he said, extending his hand as he walked over to Rick and his dad. “I’m Matt.”
Ernest Taylor gave a small, polite and unreadable smile in response as he returned the firm squeeze of Matt’s hand. His eyes flickered to the large white van that sat in the driveway, next to an old but pristine Volvo.
“Please, come in. I’ve prepared the guest room for you, Matt. Richard will be in his former room,” he said as he led them into the gloomy hallway and up the dark-wood stairs.
“Dad…” Rick said, but trailed off when he caught the slight shake of Matt’s head.
“Come down when you’re settled. Shall we say half an hour? We’ll have a sherry before dinner,” Ernest said, opening the door to the guest room, before heading back downstairs.
“I would have thought that he’d let us share, given our news,” Rick said as he sprawled on the bed, watching Matt unpack.
“His house, his rules. Anyway, Richard,” Matt said with a grin, “your dad’s from a very different generation. It’s only one night. You can survive without my body for that long.”
“Oh, don’t call me that. Only dad calls me by my proper name. Anyway, we’ve got half an hour. We could -”
“No, we couldn’t. Anyway, it’d feel a bit funny.”
Rick laughed. “What, with dad downstairs? Do you think he’d hear the bed springs or see the light fitting shake? I smuggled a boy up here once. We exchanged very nervous blow jobs before I sneaked him downstairs. I’d just shoved him through the front door when my dad came out of the living room.”
Matt finished unpacking and lay on the bed next to Rick, opening his arms so that Rick could snuggle up to him.
“You’ll have noticed that my dad’s rather - elderly,” Rick said.
“Lots of people have older parents, that’s nothing unusual.”
“No, but he’s old enough to be my granddad. He was twenty-five years older than mum.”
“You never really talk about your mum.”
Rick stiffened in Matt’s arms.
“What’s wrong?”
Rick said nothing.
“Rick?” Matt said, concern colouring his voice as he pulled back and looked down.
“Mum died. You know that.”
“Sorry, honey. I shouldn’t have -”
“She took her own life,” Rick said in a rush.
For long seconds, they lay completely still in the heavy silence of the room.
“Jesus,” Matt breathed out.
“Mortal sin for your lot, isn’t it? I suppose you think she’s gone straight to Hell. Isn’t that what Catholics believe about suicides?”
“Rick -”
“Sorry.”
Rick burrowed into Matt’s neck, feeling the steady beat of his pulse. They clung to each other, arms and legs entangling until Rick sighed and pulled himself away.
